Quick Answer

GST on an invoice is usually calculated by applying the GST rate on the taxable value. If the supply is intra-state, GST is generally split into CGST and SGST. If the supply is inter-state, IGST is generally charged. Total invoice value is taxable value plus GST amount.

Basic GST Calculation Formula

GST Amount = Taxable Value × GST Rate ÷ 100

Total Invoice Value = Taxable Value + GST Amount

Example: taxable value ₹10,000 at 18% GST gives GST ₹1,800 and total invoice value ₹11,800.

What is Taxable Value?

Taxable value is the amount on which GST is calculated. In simple invoices, it is usually the value before GST after considering discounts or adjustments where applicable.

CGST, SGST and IGST Basics

CGST and SGST are generally used for intra-state supplies. IGST is generally used for inter-state supplies. The correct treatment depends on place of supply and GST rules.

Example With CGST and SGST

Taxable value: ₹10,000. GST rate: 18%. CGST @ 9% is ₹900 and SGST @ 9% is ₹900. Total value is ₹11,800.

Example With IGST

Taxable value: ₹10,000. GST rate: 18%. IGST @ 18% is ₹1,800. Total value is ₹11,800.

GST Calculation With Discount

If original value is ₹20,000 and discount is ₹2,000, taxable value becomes ₹18,000. At 18% GST, GST amount is ₹3,240 and total invoice value is ₹21,240.

Reverse Calculation From GST-Inclusive Amount

If the amount is inclusive of GST, taxable value can be calculated as GST inclusive amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST rate). GST amount is inclusive amount minus taxable value.

Practical Example

A digital marketing consultant bills ₹30,000 at 18% GST. If the client is in the same state, the invoice may show CGST ₹2,700 and SGST ₹2,700. If the client is in another state, it may show IGST ₹5,400.
